I met Janira and her daughter in Melea in the Lake Chad region in 2022.
They fled attacks on their village and set up a makeshift hut near the village of Melea.
She talked about missing her compound at home, where she owned a little land and made a living as a farmer.
Now, she catches and sells fish from Lake Chad.
She fries the fish to preserve it in the heat of the desert and sells the fried fish to local communities to make a small income.
The host community was welcoming despite having limited resources - often a source of conflict.
When I met them her daughter was making green tea for Janira and her grandmother.
Her smile lit up the room!
My translator went to sleep in the shade because of the heat half way through my interview, but Janira and her daughter managed to communicate and share at least part of their story.
